BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University senior Margaux Farrell was named as an alternate for the 4x200 freestyle relay as a member of the French Olympic team, it was announced Sunday.
The French Olympic Trials, held in Dunkirk, France, ended Saturday evening. A native of Connecticut, Farrell holds dual U.S. and French citizenship.
Competing as an individual, Farrell finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:59.31) and fourth in the 100-meter freestyle (56.32) to gain her selection to the Olympic squad. This will be her first Olympics. Farrell recently ended her career as a 12-time All-American and four-time NCAA Championships qualifier.
Fellow Hoosier Eric Ress narrowly missed out on a spot in the team in the 200 backstroke. France had set cut times that had to be met in both the semifinal and final rounds of certain events in order to earn an Olympic spot. While Ress made the cut time in the 200 back in the semifinals (1:58.78), he was .30 off the finals cut time when he swam an identical 1:58.78, finishing second. France had set the cut time for finals at 1:58.48. As a result the French will send just one swimmer (Benjamin Stasiulis) in the 200-meter backstroke.
Ress also placed fifth in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 55.19. His sister and Hoosier freshman Justine Ress advanced to the finals of the women's 200-meter backstroke, where she placed seventh (2:16.40).
USA Swimming holds its Olympic Trials June 25-July 2 in Omaha, Neb. USA Diving Olympic Trials will be held June 17-24 in Federal Way, Wash. The swimming portion of the 2012 London Olympics will take place July 28-August 4.
