BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 20 Indiana rowing team played host to No. 7 Ohio State, No. 12 Wisconsin and Minnesota in the Big Ten Double Dual at Riddle Point Park on Lake Lemon in Bloomington on Saturday, April 7.
The Hoosiers saw perfect racing conditions, as they took on Minnesota in the morning session and Wisconsin in the afternoon session in a series of 2,000-meter pieces. The Buckeyes beat the Badgers in the morning session with a score of 43-26 and the Gophers in the afternoon session, 44-25. Indiana fell to Minnesota in the morning session, 46-23, and Wisconsin, 46-23, in the afternoon session.
"It was a great day of racing with perfect weather, but with respect to the results, obviously we're a little disappointed with the Minnesota race," said head coach Steve Peterson. "We could have done a better job, especially with our top two crews, establishing a better rhythm. We kind of let the situation control us a little bit and we didn't row our rhythm. Taking nothing away from Minnesota, by any means, but I feel like if we would have done a better job of rowing our race, we would have been a little more competitive there."
"With the Wisconsin crews, we knew coming into it that they were definitely fast," added Peterson. "That didn't surprise us. As we get faster and are closer and closer with each crews, we can't let that closeness sort of throw you off and get excited and not row your race. I feel like that's a little bit of what's going on here. I mean we have raw speed, we're going with them, but it's just not maintaining it."
In the morning session, Indiana fell to Minnesota, 46-23. IU's first Varsity 8 crew finished just six seconds behind the Gophers (6:53.2) in 6:59.3. In the second Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers clocked a time of 7:07.0, just more than five seconds off of Minnesota (7:01.3). Indiana recorded a time of 8:30.1 in the first Varsity 4 race, while Minnesota finished in 7:58.9. In the second Varsity 4 race, IU crossed the finish line in 8:48.1, behind Minnesota in 8:06.8. In the first Novice 8 race, Indiana finished in 7:35.0, just behind the Gophers in 7:26.1 and in the second Novice 8 race, the Gophers clocked a time of 7:30.7 to Indiana's 7:40.0.
In the afternoon session, Indiana finished 10 seconds behind Wisconsin (6:45.2) with a time of 6:55.4 in the first Varsity 8 race. In the second Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers crossed the finish line in 6:52.0, just behind the Badgers in 6:47.1. In the first Varsity 4 race, IU recorded a time of 8:14.4, while Wisconsin finished in 7:42.3. In the second Varsity 4 race, the Hoosiers finished in 8:15.5, behind the Badgers in 7:34.7. In the first Novice 8 race, Indiana crossed the finish line in 7:31.6, while Wisconsin finished in 7:01.5 and in the second Novice 8 race, the Badgers clocked a time of 7:23.1 to Indiana's 8:01.6.
Indiana returns to action on April 14-15 when it travels to Gold River, Calif., for the Lake Natoma Invite.
