Farrell Earns Bronze for France at Olympic Games

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana University swimmer and 2012 IU graduate Margaux Farrell became the first Hoosier to take home a medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games, earning bronze as a member of Team France's 4x200 freestyle relay.
France took third with a time of 7:47.49. The United States won gold in an Olympic record time of 7:42.92, followed by Australia (7:44.41) with the silver.
Farrell swam the second leg for France in the morning prelims, clocking a split of 2:00.06 for her 200-meter swim. France finished fifth overall in qualifying with a time of 7:52.88.
"Being that this was my first time swimming at this level in front of over 17,000 people, I am happy with the experience," Farrell told NBC Connecticut after her morning race.
"I'm happy I at least got the chance to swim. All in all, great experience and no regrets."
Although she did not swim in the evening final, Farrell earns a medal as a result of participation in the morning qualifying round that advanced France to the final.
Farrell was a 12-time All-American during her four seasons at Indiana and was the Big Ten champion in the 200-yard freestyle in 2010. She helped lead Indiana to three Big Ten team titles (2009, 10, 11) and a pair of top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships (2009, 10).
She is the third Hoosier swimmer to earn an Olympic medal, joining former IU swimmers Kathleen Ellis (1964- 2 gold; 2 bronze) and Jennifer Hooker (1976-gold). Hoosier divers Leslie Bush (1964-gold) and Cynthia Potter (1976-bronze) were also Olympic medalists.
