IU Wraps Up Competition at U.S. Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Indiana University swimmers wrapped up day five of competition Saturday at the U.S. Open at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Junior Lindsay Vrooman raced to a fifth-place finish in the grueling 1,500-meter freestyle, coming in at 16:49.55. Senior Ryan Hinshaw swam the 800-meter freestyle for the men, placing 15th (8:19.53).
Junior Cody Miller was poised for a top-five finish in the men's 200-meter individual medley but was disqualified in the championship final. Sophomore Steve Schmuhl finished seventh in the race (2:03.78), while senior Sam Trahin swam the consolation final, finishing 14th (2:04.83).
Continuing her comeback from a major illness, sophomore Sara Delay placed 27th in the women's 50-meter freestyle at 26.50. Senior Daniel Kanorr was 29th in the men's race (23.52).
It was announced Saturday that Jim Barbiere as earned a spot on the USA Swimming squad at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Barbiere will be a member of the 4x200 freestyle relay team. Remaining spots on the U.S. squad will be announced no later than Sept. 1.
