IOWA CITY, Iowa - Indiana Rowing travelled to Iowa City on Saturday, Oct. 12, to scrimmage the Iowa Hawkeyes in a series of controlled rate pieces over two different distances.
The scrimmage for the weekend was broken up into two parts. In the first half of the scrimmage, the varsity crews faced off over two 4000m races with a controlled rate of 28. Both Varsity 8's split the pieces with Iowa, while the Varsity 4 swept the Hawkeyes.
"We learned a lot from the first set of pieces," said head coach Steve Peterson. "First, we definitely attacked the stroke much more than we did when we raced two weeks ago, but we also learned we can take it to another gear and get even faster. The second is, we need to work on our steering. These 4000m pieces took place on Iowa's long winding river course, which is something we don't deal with back home on Lake Lemon. I think that really showed in particular in the 8's, as we lost a lot of ground going around the bends in the river. Thankfully, in our championship racing the course is a straight shot."
During the second half of the scrimmage, the crews faced off in a series of 1000m races. The Novice crews joined in for this part of the scrimmage, getting their first taste of racing action at Indiana. The Hoosiers, once again, split with the Hawkeyes. Although no crew completely swept the racing, Indiana did get the upper hand in all three Varsity events. The Varsity crews were all scheduled to do five 1000m pieces, but the Indiana Varsity 8 was forced to go in after only three pieces due to an injury to one of the rowers sustained during the third piece. The top Hoosiers' crew for the day was the Second Varsity 8, which won four of its five races against Iowa, with the Varsity 8 winning two of three races and the Varsity 4 capturing three of five.
"Overall it was a great weekend with successful results as well as some good lessons that the team that can grow from," added Peterson. "I was really happy with how our crews attacked the workout. We have been working on it for the past few weeks and will continue to do so, but the improvements are visible and the results reflected that. I also think that we are showing good speed at this point of the year, with only four weeks of practice under our belts. We definitely have a long way to go, but the foundation of work they are building upon is solid."
The weekend also included the Hoosiers leaving Bloomington early to support IU Field Hockey vs. Iowa on Friday afternoon.
The Hoosiers are slated to scrimmage again on Nov. 2 when they take on Dayton and Marietta on Lake Lemon. On Nov. 9, Indiana will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for its final scrimmage of the fall against Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame.
