BUTLER AT A GLANCE
Butler is in its first season as part of the Big East Conference and arrives in Assembly Hall for the first time since 2008. The Bulldogs have excelled on the offensive end, scoring 76 or more points in three games and averaging 76.0 points per contest. The 1-3 record is deceiving as Butler has lost two games in overtime and lost by only four in its last game. Liz Stratman, Daress McClung and Taylor Schippers are all scoring in double-figures for the Bulldogs. Stratman averages 15.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and is connecting on 61.5 percent of her shots. McClung averages 14.3 points and 7.3 boards each game as Schippers scores 12.3 points per contest.
FIRST 4-0 START SINCE 2006
Indiana topped Central Arkansas on Nov. 18, 80-53, improving to 4-0 to begin the 2013-14 season. It marks the program's best start since the beginning of the 2006-07 season and this is just the third time since 2000 an IU team has began the year with four consecutive wins.
HOT START FOR HOOSIER OFFENSE
Indiana has began the 2013-14 campaign by scoring 80 or more points in the three of its first four games, a feat last accomplished to begin the 1999-00 season. IU opened the year with back-to-back 85 point scoring nights, the first time IU had scored over 80 points in consecutive games since the 2006-07 season when the Hoosiers tallied 81 points against Illinois (2/18/07) and then 83 points vs. Northwestern (2/22/07). The Hoosiers totaled 170 points in those first two contests, the program's best back-to-back game point total since Nov. 2006 when IU scored 183 points combined in two consecutive games (85 vs. Valparaiso 11/15/06, 98 vs. Dayton 11/19/06).
Indiana's 85 points in the season opening win over Oakland were the most points scored by a Hoosier team since Feb. 19, 2009, when IU tallied 85 points at Northwestern. It was the most points for an IU team in a season opening game since the start of the 2002-03 season when IU downed Wofford, 90-34. The 30-point win was the largest margin of victory since Dec. 9, 2009, when Indiana topped UT Martin, 80-46.
At IPFW on Nov. 12, the Hoosiers scored 43 points in the first half and 42 points in the second half, marking the first time an Indiana team had scored 40 points or more in both halves of a game since Nov. 14, 2008 vs. Ball State (44-1st, 40-2nd). Against Oakland, IU scored 48 first half points, the most points scored by a Hoosier team in a half since IU tallied 55 second-half points vs. Virginia on Nov. 26, 2009.
SHOT INTERFERENCE
Indiana is limiting opponents to shoot 34.6 percent so far on the year and have held foes to 33.3 percent shooting or lower in three of the first four games. IU is really defending the outside as opponents are connecting on just 17.3 percent of their 3-point field goal attempts and have limited the opposition to shoot 21.4 percent or lower from beyond the arc in each game.
Last time out against Central Arkansas, IU limited the Sugar Bears to just 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) from long distance and that was on the heels of holding Indiana State (Nov. 15) to only 21.4 percent (3-of-14) shooting from long range. It was much of the same in Indiana's first two games as IPFW Shot 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) and Oakland went 4-of-25 (16.0 percent) from 3-point range.
THE BENCHSQUAD
In the win over Central Arkansas on Nov. 18, the Hoosier reserves were major contributors as the IU bench tallied 37 points, the most since Nov. 16, 2011 (44 vs. Belmont). Indiana's bench has scored 34 or more points in two of the first four games as the reserves tallied 34 points in the season opening win over Oakland on Nov. 9. IU's bench never eclipsed the 30-point mark a year ago and last did so two seasons ago (34 points at Ohio State, 2/16/12).
PULL DOWN THAT REBOUND
In each of IU's first four games, Indiana has won the rebounding battle, to become the first IU team since the 2008-09 season to win the rebounding battle in four straight games. The Hoosiers own a plus-8.5 rebounding margin over opponents on the year. Indiana is averaging 41.8 boards per game and had its most impressive night on the glass in the season opener vs. Oakland. Indiana outrebounded the Golden Grizzlies, 50-30. The plus-20 rebounding margin was the biggest margin on the boards for IU in the Curt Miller era.
IU MATCHES ROAD WIN TOTAL FROM LAST YEAR
With Indiana's road wins at IPFW on Nov. 12 and at Indiana State on Nov. 15, the Hoosiers matched their total road win total from a year ago (2) just three games into this season.
LARRYN LIGHTING IT UP
Freshman Larryn Brooks has had a stellar start to her college career as she has led the Hoosiers in scoring and assists in each of the first four games. She is currently averaging 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game while shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 83.8 percent from the free throw line.
She has tallied 15 or more points in each contest and had her most productive night at IPFW on Nov. 12. In that game, Brooks scored 25 points, the most points scored by a Hoosier freshman since 1999 (Jill Chapman, 31 points), and added six assists and four rebounds. She shot 13-of-15 from the free throw line in that game, including some clutch free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
THE BELL TOLLS
Sophomore Nicole Bell ignited the Hoosier offense off the bench in the win over Central Arkansas. When Bell entered the game, IU led 13-10 midway through the first half, she then helped the Hoosiers go on a 14-6 run over a 2:21 span thanks in part to nailing back-to-back 3-point field goals during that stretch.
Bell was the leading scorer off the bench for the Hoosiers as she tallied 11 points, shooting 4-of-8 from the field including three 3-point field goals. She has now hit three or more 3-pointers in a game in seven career games.
BIG SASH MAKING BIG SPLASH
Sixth-year senior Sasha Chaplin has had a big start to her final season. She is averaging 11.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting 64.5 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
Last time out vs. Central Arkansas, Chaplin shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the field to finish with 10 points and added four rebounds. She was efficient as she scored those 10 points in 10 minutes of play. At IPFW on Nov. 15, Chaplin scored 21 points, one point shy of her career high, in 22 minutes of play in that game, shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line to go along with seven boards.
LET'S GO GERARDOT
Senior transfer Tabitha Gerardot has been a solid contribute in her first year in an IU uniform. She is averaging 11.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. She has scored in double-figures in three of Indiana's games this year and last time out against Central Arkansas just missed a double-double performance with nine points and nine rebounds.
Gerardot enrolled at Indiana after spending the last three seasons at Valparaiso University. The Ft. Wayne, Ind., native earned her undergraduate degree from Valpo in three years. She is working on her master's degree in linguistics after earning undergraduate degrees in French and Spanish. Gerardot is fluent in five languages.
The 6-1 Gerardot led the Crusaders in scoring in each of her last two seasons and averaged a near double-double last year with 15.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. She shot 47.4 percent during her junior season from the field and over 34 percent from beyond the arc on her way to earning Second Team All-Horizon League honors. Over her three years at Valpo, Gerardot appeared in every single game for the Crusaders and started in 91 of 93 contests to compile 1,215 career points while bringing in 723 career rebounds.
