WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana men's cross country team earned its first Big Ten title in 33 years on Saturday at the 2013 Big Ten Cross Country Championships hosted by Purdue. The Hoosier men had four runners finish in the top 10 en route to the championship.
As a team, Indiana compiled 51 points finishing ahead of second place Michigan (66 points) and third place Wisconsin (71 points). Saturday's win gave IU its first conference crown since 1980 and snapped Wisconsin's 14-year Big Ten title streak.
Redshirt freshman Jason Crist led the Hoosier pack with a fifth place finish in a time of 24:24 on the 8K course. Rorey Hunter and Carl Smith were just steps behind finishing in seventh (24:34) and eighth (24:34), respectively.
Matt Schwartzer crossed the line in 10th position in a time of 24:36. Evan Esselink rounded out the Hoosier scoring with a 21st place finish in 24:52.
By finishing in the top seven overall individually, Crist and Hunter earned First Team All-Big Ten honors. Smith and Schwartzer were recognized with second team all-conference laurels. All five of IU's scorers were within 28 seconds of each other.
The Indiana women placed sixth as a team. Samantha Ginther ran her way to First Team All-Big Ten honors with a seventh place finish in a time of 21:08 on the 6K course.
Other IU scorers included Amanda Behnke (24th, 21:41), Kelsey Duerksen (34th, 21:55), Brianna Johnson (35th, 22:01) and Erica Ridderman (58th, 22:35).
The NCAA Great Lakes Regional is next up for IU's varsity runners on Nov. 15 in Madison, Wis. Those runners not participating at the regional will compete in the Hoosier Invitational on Friday, Nov. 8, in Bloomington, Ind. at the IU Championship Cross Country Course. That event will begin at 3:15 p.m. ET.
