BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team took on Dayton and Eastern Michigan in a scrimmage on Saturday, March 30, at Lake Lemon in Bloomington.
Under ideal weather conditions with temperatures in the upper 50's, minimal wind and flat water, the Hoosiers' Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Novice 8 and Varsity 4's swept five, 5-minute pieces, with Dayton taking second.
"This was a good workout today for our athletes," said head coach Steve Peterson. "We only got on the water here a couple of days ago, so we really didn't have too much of a plan in place for the pieces. We simply wanted the crews to go after it in each piece, and see what worked and what didn't.
As expected with the lack of water time, our starts weren't too fast, but I was happy with the way the athletes established a good race rhythm to move away from the other crews in the body of the race," Peterson added. "I also think the results show that the work we have done during winter training has given the athletes a good solid physiological base to build off of."
Indiana will hold its first home regatta of the spring when it plays host to Kansas and Georgetown on Saturday, April 6, on Lake Lemon.
"With Kansas and Georgetown coming to town, we will take the next week to work on cleaning up our bladework and to work on the various aspects of our race plan," said Peterson. "Bottom line it was great to get back on the water and race against someone. This has been a really long winter for our athletes and I know they are extremely excited to be rowing again."
