BELLEVILLE, Mich. - The Indiana Rowing team competed in a weather-shortened Big Ten Double Dual, hosted by No. 13 Michigan, on Belleville Lake, Saturday, April 13. The racing schedule was shortened due to an expected inclement forecast.
"We had a last minute line-up change, which kind of threw some of the athletes off a bit, and with the projected conditions being cold, windy and choppy - there was definitely a lot going on for the athletes heading into to Saturday," said head coach Steve Peterson. "In general, they did an okay job of it. With the schedule getting shuffled around, the conditions weren't too bad, other than being cold when we raced, so I think our athletes did a pretty good job of dealing with that challenge."
The Hoosiers opened with the First Varsity 8 beating Michigan State (4th, 6:54.13) by nearly three seconds to finish in 6:51.72 to take third. It marked the first time the Hoosiers have knocked off an always-tough Spartan crew. Indiana finished just behind the Wolverines, who took second in 6:38.15. No. 4 Ohio State took first in 6:32.7.
"In the First Varsity 8, we were really close with Michigan State and they were up on us with half a boat length as we were going into the last 500 and one of their rowers caught a crab with about 300 meters to go, which allowed us to catch up and get even with them," said Peterson. "That last 300 meters, we definitely moved away them from them for our first-ever Varsity 8 win over Michigan State."
In the Second Varsity 8 race, Indiana narrowly missed Michigan (2nd, 6:056.3) and Michigan State (3rd, 6:56.63) by nearly eight seconds to come in fourth with a time of 7:04.57. Ohio State finished in first with a time of 6:48.1. Indiana's First Varsity 4 crossed the finish line in 7:51.4 for third, with Michigan State taking fourth in 8:20.9. Ohio State won the race in 7:33.9 and Michigan took second in 7:37.9. In the Second Varsity 4, IU finished in 8:22.8 for fourth, while Ohio State took first in 7:42.4, followed by Michigan (2nd, 7:43.4) and Michigan State (3rd, 7:47.8). The Hoosiers took fourth in the Third Varsity 4 with a time of 8:29.6.
In the First Novice 8 race, Indiana fell short of Michigan State (3rd, 7:05.3) by two seconds to finish in 7:07.4 for fourth. Michigan took first in 6:58.8 and Ohio State finished in second with a time of 7:01.1.
"We knew coming into it that Ohio State and Michigan were going to be fast," Peterson said. "Michigan finished second at NCAA's last year and Ohio State finished among the top five, so they aren't slow and neither have the results that they've had so far this season. We were aiming at those guys, but being realistic we weren't sure that we would get them. With that being said against Michigan State - that was really the focus and target for us across the board. They were also an NCAA team last year. It was definitely a tall order coming into the weekend."
The Hoosiers return to action on April 20-21, when they compete in the Clemson Invitational.
"Looking at the results, margin-wise we are in the mix with these crews that are top-five, top-10 in the country," added Peterson. "We are definitely seeing some good improvement and I think there are some things that we can identify to work on heading into this week when we go to Clemson."
