BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team will travel south for the Clemson Invitational on Saturday April 20-Sunday, April 21 on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, SC.
The Hoosiers are coming off a weather-shortened Big Ten Double Dual, hosted by No. 13 Michigan, where the First Varsity 8 boat finished third in 6:51.72, beating Michigan State by nearly three seconds for the crews' first-ever win over the Spartans. Indiana also had its Second Varsity 8 and Novice 8 boats in the mix with No. 4 Ohio State and the Wolverines, while also closely battling MSU.
"Last weekend, we had a couple line-up changes for injury purposes and what it did for us was force our hand to kind of look at some different combinations of line-ups and also race plans," said head coach Steve Peterson. "So this week, we've definitely been working on trying to figure out what is going to make us go faster, specifically I think the start is an area that we can improve upon, especially in the Varsity 8, and generally just being a little bit more aggressive. The practices that we've had this week, we've been trying to tailor to that. This weekend is going to be a fantastic weekend to see if we're headed in the right direction with that or not."
On Saturday, the Hoosiers will take part in two sessions of 2,000-meter racing against No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 5 UCLA, No. 13 Michigan, No. 14 Clemson, No. 18 Louisville, No. 20 Duke, Michigan State, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Texas, starting at 8:53 a.m. ET. For Sunday's morning session, Indiana will face Louisville, Miami, Ohio State, Penn, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA and Virginia.
"Racing down in Clemson is great," Peterson added. "We go down there for spring break, the athletes have already raced on the course, so they are comfortable with it. We're going to be facing a lot of good crews and we'll be seeing some crews from the West Coast, including UCLA, other Big Ten schools and then some East Coast schools. So this is a great opportunity for us. We'll race three times down there, so we're going to walk away with some great experience."
Following the Clemson Invitational, the Hoosiers will host the fifth annual Dale England Cup on Lake Lemon, April 26-27, in Bloomington. Racing will take place at Riddle Point Park on Lake Lemon with an afternoon session on Friday, followed by two sessions starting Saturday morning.
