IU Rowing Hosts Fifth Annual Dale England Cup This Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team will hold the fifth annual Dale England Cup on Lake Lemon, starting with an afternoon session at Riddle Point Park at 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday, April 26. The Hoosiers are playing host to No. 10 Notre Dame, Alabama and Big Ten rival Iowa. Racing will continue on Saturday, April 27, beginning with a morning session at 8:30 a.m., followed by an afternoon session at 11:50 a.m. Parking and admission is free to the public.
The Hoosiers are coming off a weekend of racing at the Clemson Invitational where the Second Varsity 8 crew, made up of Kelsey Cundiff (coxswain), Grace Mendel, Kim Gilmour, Ann Thompson, Lindsey Barber, Sarah Browning, Annie Kunze, Megan Fitzpatrick and Mary Koewler, picked up their first-ever win over Michigan State and the First Varsity 4 crew, made up of Megan Duffy (coxswain), Emma Miller, Olivia Gugliemotto, Sarah Elser and Chelsea Ernest, posted their first-ever win over Minnesota.
"The Clemson Invitational this past weekend was a good trip for us," said head coach Steve Peterson. "We learned a lot. It wasn't a perfect weekend. We didn't win all of our races. We had some victories and we had some things that we came away with we need to work on. I think the Second Varsity 8 really started to figure things out and that was exciting to see, same with the Varsity 4, but we definitely have to work on the last half of our race."
Opponents for the Hoosiers in this year's Dale England Cup consists of all first-time participants. Last year, Duke won the regatta after weather forced the cancellation of the second day of racing. There was a three-way tie between Duke, Indiana and Rhode Island, but the Blue Devils came away with the Cup after winning the First Varsity 8 on day one of racing.

Dale England, father of Becky England who was an Indiana coxswain from 2000-03, has been a long-time friend and supporter of the IU Rowing program and the entire Indiana Athletics department.
"Dale has stayed a faithful fan of all IU Athletics ever since his daughter was part of our program," added Peterson. "When we were looking to name this regatta a few years ago, we wanted to name it after someone special who meant a lot to the team and there's not a more fitting person that we could have named this regatta after than Dale England."
Following the Dale England Cup, the Hoosiers will prepare for the 2013 Big Ten Championships on Sunday, May 19, at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
Directions to Riddle Point Park:
From Memorial Stadium, take 17th street to the bypass (45N/46E). Turn right on the bypass and follow it past the Indiana University Golf Course on your left. At the next traffic light, 45N and 46E will split. Turn left at this light, staying on 45 North/10th Street. Follow 45 North/10th Street for approximately seven miles and watch for a green sign for Lake Lemon/Riddle Point. Shortly after the green sign, at the top of the hill, you will take a left onto Tunnel Road. Follow Tunnel Road for approximately three miles and it will take you right into Riddle Point Park.
