INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team finished seventh at the 2013 Big Ten Championships on Sunday, May 19 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
Ohio State came away with the title with 160 points for first, while Michigan finished in second with 135 points and Wisconsin took third with 134 points. Michigan State finished in fourth with 85 points, followed by Minnesota (72) and Iowa (54). The Hoosiers finished with 28 points.
"It was disappointing," said head coach Steve Peterson. "People worked really hard, but our biggest thing as we sit here and look at it - we had a lot of distractions this year with accidents and injuries, you name it. Random things popped up that shouldn't have been factors, but ended up ultimately becoming big factors. With the results today, I think they raced as hard as they could have today. It was not about that, but through the course of the year we were not as deliberate and focused on training as we needed to be and it shows. You can't race the caliber of these crews at this level and expect to be going 90 percent or 95 percent and do well. That's just not going to happen."
Indiana's Novice 8 crew took fifth in the Hoosiers' first race of the day with a time of 7:15.915, narrowly missing Michigan State (7:14.462) for fourth, and beating out Minnesota (6th, 7:20.332) by five seconds and Iowa (7th, 7:51.725) by 36 seconds. In the Third Varsity 4, Indiana finished in sixth with a time of 8:30.117. The Hoosiers took seventh in the Second Varsity 4 race in 8:11.726, just missing Minnesota by seven seconds. IU finished in 7:58.058 in the First Varsity 4 for seventh place.
In the Second Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers fell just short at the finish line to Iowa (6th, 6:58.714) by two seconds with a time of 7:00.964 to take seventh. After sitting in sixth for much of the race, Indiana narrowly missed beating Iowa at the finish line in the First Varsity 8 race. The Hoosiers recorded a time of 6:55.869 for seventh, just four seconds behind Iowa (6th, 6:51.504).
Indiana senior Madelyn Shields earned First Team All-Big Ten honors, while junior Asja Zero was named to the second team. Freshman Olivia Gugliemotto was named IU's Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree.
"Madelyn is phenomenal," said Peterson. "She's a senior and we're going to really miss her next year. She's really strong and is a quiet leader on this team, which is great. She just gives everything she has at all times. I think she was really 100 percent committed to the goal of medaling and I'm bummed out for her in particular, because she's the epitome of the student-athlete that any coach is looking for in any sport. Asja is a great athlete, but she's one of the people that we dealt with who had a number of injuries throughout the year. Throughout it all, she trained and worked really hard. I think both of them are very deserving of the Big Ten honors that they received."
