Swimmers Compete at Phillips 66 US Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS - Members of the Indiana University swimming teams hit the pool Tuesday for day one of the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships at the IU Natatorium/IUPUI Aquatics Center in Indianapolis. The meet serves as the qualifying event for the 2013 World Championships, being held July 19-August 4 in Barcelona, Spain.
Senior Lindsay Vrooman crushed her heat in the 800-meter freestyle with a school-record time of 8:37.87. That tops the old mark of 8:40.38 set by Nikki White in 2009. It placed her 10th overall in the field.
Junior Steve Schmuhl represented the men in the 200-meter butterfly, finishing 11th overall with a career-best time of 1:59.14. That tops his previous PR of 1:59.60, set in morning prelims where he finished ninth, just out of the championship final.
Sophomore Haley Lips placed 19th in prelims of the 200-meter butterfly competition with a time of 2:14.25. That is the second-fastest time in IU history for a woman in the 200-meter race.
Competition runs through Saturday. Wednesday's events will feature Lips, Schmuhl and Vrooman in the 200-meter freestyle, senior Cody Miller in the 200 breaststroke, and Schmuhl and James Wells in the 200-meter backstroke.
