Escobedo Places Fifth at World Championships in Budapest

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Former Hoosier and four-time All-American Angel Escobedo advanced to the bronze medal match of the World Championships, ultimately finishing in fifth place of the 55 kg/121 lbs. weight class.
The Griffith, Ind., native tallied three wins on the day while competing for Team USA. Escobedo started the event with back-to-back shutout victories over Andre Dukov of Romania (6-0) and Robert Kardos of Hungary (8-0). After suffering a 6-0 defeat to Amit Kumar (India), he bounced back with an 8-2 triumph over France's Zoheir El Ourrage. In the bronze medal bout versus Sezer Akgui (Turkey), Escobedo carried a 1-0 advantage entering the second period. Akgui was able to score a takedown, however, and secure a 2-1 win.
"I thought I wrestled decently, but this is obviously not what I wanted," said Escobedo. "I wanted to win a gold medal. I've made improvements and I'm going in the right direction. I want to come back and win a World title next year."
