IUXC Completes the Indiana Open to Begin Season

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Indiana Open to begin the 2013 campaign on Saturday morning at the IU Championship Cross Country Course. Indiana's Kelsey Duerksen took the win in the women's 5K race and IU's Nolan Fife placed first in the men's 8K race. There was no team score for the event.
In the women's race, Duerksen crossed the line in a time of 18:22. Hoosier senior Samantha Ginther finished just behind Duerksen in 18:24 before Molly Winters clocked in 18:43 for third place. Indiana's Erica Ridderman finished in fifth in 18:46, two spots ahead of teammate Brianna Johnson who finished seventh in 18:54. Amanda Behnke was the final IU runner to place in the top 10 as she finished in a time of 19:04 for ninth place.
On the men's side, Fife clocked in at 25:30 in the top spot as an IU pack followed close behind. Matt Schwatzer placed third (25:36.1), just barely outsprinting Jason Crist (25:36.6) who placed fourth. Kyle Overway came in fifth (25:38), Evan Esselink placed sixth (25:39), Robbie Nierman was seventh (25:45) and JR Ricker came in eighth (25:54). Rounding out the top ten was Indiana's Owen Skeete who ran the course in 26:03 for 10th place.
The Hoosiers will next compete in and host the Indiana Intercollegiates on Friday, Sept. 20. That meet is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET at the IU Championship Cross Country Course in Bloomington.
SCHEDULE NOTE: Indiana will not be competing at the Purdue Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13.
