BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Amelia Anderson led the Indiana volleyball team with 13 kills and junior Courtney Harnish registered 18 digs, but the Hoosiers lost 3-1 (15-25, 27-25, 8-25, 23-25) against Purdue on Saturday at University Gym.
Sophomore setter Megan Tallman tallied 36 assists and fellow sophomore outside hitter Taylor Lebo had eight kills and tied her career-high with 17 digs in the match.
After coming up short in the first set, the Hoosiers (12-6, 3-3 Big Ten) came out swinging in the second frame. Junior middle blocker Awele Nwaeze connected on eight kills on 14 attempts (.500 hitting percentage) in the set, but Purdue held a 21-19 lead late in the second set. A kill by Nwaeze and a Purdue attack error brought the score to 21-21, one of 16 ties in the set. The score would be knotted again at 25-25, when a Purdue attack error by setter Val Nichol and an Anderson kill gave the Hoosiers the 27-25 set victory.
After dropping the third set, the Hoosiers came out focused in the fourth set and jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a kill by senior Morgan Leach and two Purdue attack errors. Purdue would battle back and take the next four points to go up 4-3.
With the score even at 5-5, the Hoosiers would catch fire and go on an 8-3 run with kills by three different players and pull ahead 13-8. The Hoosiers remained in control with a 16-11 lead until Purdue used a 6-1 spurt to tie the set at 17-17.
Both teams traded blows with ties at 18, 19, 20 and 21, until two Purdue attack errors but the Hoosiers up 23-21. Two attack errors by the Hoosiers tied the score again, 23-23 and an ace and a kill gave Purdue a 25-23 set victory and a 3-1 match win.
Earlier in the day the Hoosiers had a special banquet as they celebrated the 40th anniversary of IU volleyball with over 100 alumni, family and friends, including the first head coach in program history, Ann Lawver. Between sets two and three of the match the alumni were recognized and before the match Denise and Barry Lessow, friends of the program were presented with a special framed No. 40 jersey honoring the 40 years of IU Volleyball and their support of the Hoosiers.
Up next the Hoosiers host Ohio State on Friday Oct. 17 and Penn State on Saturday Oct. 18.
