BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Morgan Leach became the 17th Indiana volleyball player to reach 1,000 career kills as she led the Hoosiers with 12 kills, but the Hoosiers fell to Ohio State in three sets, 25-27, 17-25, 20-25 Friday at University Gym.
Another Hoosier climbing the record books was Megan Tallman, who tallied 31 assists to move into ninth on the all-time with 1,484.
The first set featured 18 ties and six lead changes with neither team leading by more than one point until a block by junior Awele Nwaeze and Tallman gave Indiana a 12-10 lead. Ohio State seized momentum with a 6-1 run to take a 16-13 lead, but the Hoosiers came back to score nine of the next 13 points to go up 22-20.
A pair of kills and an IU attack error tied the set 23-23 as both teams traded kills to again tie the set 24-24. After an attack error by the Hoosiers, Leach slammed down one of her four kills in the set, to bring another tie, 25-25, but a service error and an attack error by IU gave Ohio State the set, 27-25.
In set two it was the Ohio State offense that caught fire as they hit .469 with 17 kills and just two errors as they jumped out to a 10-6 lead. The Hoosiers came back and tied the set 12-12 on a kill by junior Amelia Anderson. The set would have four more ties including 16-16, but Ohio State closed from there on a 9-1 run to take set two 25-17.
In set three the Hoosiers were much more efficient on offense with 14 kills and three errors, hitting .423. Leach registered seven kills on eight attempts (.875 hitting percentage) including her milestone 1,000th career kill. The Buckeyes continued to stay hot as well with 19 kills and three errors to hit .471 for the set and closed out the match.
Sophomore Taylor Lebo tallied 12 digs and junior libero Courtney Harnish added 10 digs for the Hoosiers.
Up next the Hoosiers host Penn State tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. The match will be a “Red Out” and fans are encouraged to wear red and can purchase tickets for $2 by doing so.
