This is the third time this season Heilman has recorded multiple goals in a contest. She had back-to-back hat-tricks to open the season.
"Audra was so on," said Indiana Head Coach Amy Robertson. "She felt the game, she could eliminate like no other and she was a spark. They had to worry about her and the entire team played up to their potential today. So much composure with Audra on the front end, Sydney (Supica) on the back end and everyone in between just had absolutely solid role performances."
Neither team was able to find the back of the cage in the first period. The Spartans (7-5, 2-3 Big Ten) did earn four penalty corners in the opening period, but were unable to capitalize.
The Hoosiers came out firing in the second period, as they outshot Michigan State 17-9.
Heilman broke the stalemate with her 11th goal of the season as she sent one in after getting into a one-on-one situation with Spartan goalkeeper Sierra Patton.
Heilman's second goal came off a rebound on a shot by Kate Barber following a penalty corner for the Hoosiers in the 53rd minute.
The Spartans ended the shutout 10 minutes later as Abby Barker lobbed a pass to Megan Fenton for the score. Michigan State had three more chances on penalty corners as the clock read 00:00. However, Indiana goalkeeper Maggie Olson and Karen Lorite both made saves to secure the Hoosier victory.
Saturday's win marks the first time since 2011 the Hoosiers have beaten ranked opponents in back-to-back contests. Indiana defeated No. 4 Duke last weekend, 3-2.
"It's huge, this is the time of year we want to start building our play and having confidence. We're exactly where we should be and we just have to keep our foot on the pedal and be hungry to continue to improve and realize we're a team in the Big Ten that can beat any other team on any day," said Robertson.
The Hoosiers continue their four-game home swing as they host Ohio State Friday at 3 p.m.
