BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After dropping the first set to No. 7 Penn State, the Indiana volleyball team battled to an 18-17 lead, but the defending national champion Nittany Lions, scored eight of the next nine points to win the set and eventually the match in three sets, 11-25, 19-25, 15-25 Saturday at University Gym.
Junior Amelia Anderson led the Hoosiers (12-8, 3-5 Big Ten) with 11 kills and hit .304 for the match. Sophomore setter Megan Tallman tallied 25 assists and junior captain Courtney Harnish led IU in digs with eight.
In the first set a Penn State kill, two IU attack errors and a service ace by Penn State senior Micha Hancock, who leads the nation in service aces, put the Nittany Lions (18-3, 6-2 Big Ten) on top 4-0. Anderson connected on three kills in the opening set, but Penn State put down 14 kills and hit .700 to win the first set 25-11.
In set two it was a different story as five different players recorded kills and the Hoosiers hit over .600 through the first 18 points. The second set featured 13 ties and four lead changes with both teams extremely efficient on the attack.
Anderson tallied five kills in the set and junior captain Chante George came in to give the Hoosiers an offensive spark with four kills on five attempts (.800 hitting percentage). Anderson hit .364 and slammed down one of her five kills to put the Hoosiers up 18-17, when Hancock got a kill to tie the score 18-18 and stepped to the service line.
The Hoosiers hit .444 with 15 kills on 27 attempts in the set, but back-to-back kills by Nia Grant and an ace by Hancock ignited Penn State to a 7-0 run and a 25-19 victory in the set.
The Hoosiers were plagued by errors in set three with eight attack errors and despite five players picking up kills Penn State won the third set 25-15 to close the match.
