BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team recorded three unanswered goals in the second period to defeat No. 4 Duke on Sunday, 3-2. The victory marks the first time since a 2006 win against then-No. 5 Ohio State that the Hoosiers have knocked off a top-5 team.
A quick goal by Jessica Buttinger in the fifth minute gave Duke (8-3) a 1-0 advantage. The Blue Devils added to their first period lead as Heather Morris’ found the back of the net with 12 minutes remaining in the opening period.
“We did not play to our best in the first half,” said Indiana head coach Amy Robertson. “We could choose to continue to play mediocre field hockey, or we could make some changes, play with some confidence, trust your teammates and go hard. That’s what the team did. It wasn’t a sweet and soft halftime talk – it was a reality check. The team responded unbelievably.”
The Hoosiers came out fighting in the second half as they recorded three goals in a seven-minute period.
Freshman Taylor Pearson put the Hoosiers are on the board with her first career goal in the 47th minute.
Three minutes later, senior Audra Heilman fired one to the back of the net off an assist by junior Karen Lorite to tie the contest at 2-2.
For the second game in a row, junior Sydney Supica found the back of the net for Indiana as she knocked in the game winner off a penalty corner and assists from Brigitta Haller and Caitlin Bearish.
“That’s just Sydney. Something really good about Sydney today was she played her roll to full potential. She has that ability to change the game,” said Robertson.
Goalkeeper Maggie Olson had a busy day in the net as she recorded nine saves, including six in the second period.
The last time the Blue Devils faced Indiana in Bloomington, the Hoosiers came away with 3-2 victory against then-No. 15 Duke off an overtime goal by Morgan Fleetwood.
The Hoosiers will return home on Saturday, Oct. 11 as they host Michigan State at 1 p.m.
