MADISON, Wis. -- The Indiana cross country teams competed in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday afternoon at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Wisconsin. The Indiana men placed fourth as a team as the women finished in seventh.
The men’s race featured a tight pack throughout the race and the No. 20 Hoosiers had three runners finish in the top 20. Evan Esselink was the first Hoosier to finish in ninth position overall in the 10K run with a time of 30:29. Matt Schwartzer came in 12th place, clocking in at 30:35. Jason Crist was the third IU runner to finish as he came in 20th place crossing the line in 30:39.
Other IU scorers were JR Ricker in 35th (30:57) and Owen Skeete in 50th (31:19). As a team, the Indiana men combined for 126 points.
The IU women’s team placed seventh overall in the women’s standings with 198 points. Brittany Neeley led the Hoosiers in 29th (20:50) and Amanda Behnke was just behind her in 30th place (20:52). Indiana’s Jill Whitman was the third Hoosier to finish in a time of 20:56 in 35th position. Bethany Neeley placed 46th overall (21:05) as IU’s final scorer was Madison Stenger in 58th (21:25).
The top two finishing teams in the regional advance on to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 22. The remaining 13 at-large bids will be announced this weekend.
