BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore Taylor Lebo recorded her 50th ace of the season, but the Indiana volleyball team lost in three sets (11-25, 20-25, 24-26) on Wednesday at University Gym.
Lebo served up an ace in the second set for the Hoosiers, as she became the seventh player in program history to register 50 or more aces in a season.
Sophomore Allison Hammond posted her third double-digit kill effort of the season and recorded her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs in the match. Hammond came alive for the Hoosiers in the third set as she notched six of her 10 kills and hit .308 in the set.
Senior Morgan Leach tallied six kills to bring her career total to 1,084 and sophomore setter Megan Tallman registered 34 assists to bring her season total to 1,061.
After a slow start in the first set, the Hoosiers (15-14, 6-11) re-focused in the second set. Down by as many as eight at 20-12, IU rallied and scored three in a row and used a 7-3 run to get within four at 23-19 on a kill by Lebo. From there Nebraska scored on an IU error and after a kill by junior Chante George the Cornhuskers (19-7, 13-4) got a kill to end the set 25-20.
In set three the Hoosiers tallied a match-high 16 kills and hit their best hitting percentage at .243. Lebo connected on seven kills and hit .417 in the set and Indiana raced out to a 6-3 lead.
Nebraska gained momentum and took a 12-8 lead, but the Hoosiers showed fight and although Nebraska continued to lead at 17-14 the Hoosiers scored three straight points on kills by Lebo and Hammond and a Nebraska attack error to tie the set 17-17.
The set went back and fourth as it eventually finished with 12 ties and four lead changes, one of those ties at 23-23.
Nebraska would have set and match points on a kill to make it 24-23, but the Hoosiers came back with a kill from Lebo to knot the set at 24-24. From there Nebraska executed on offense to get a kill and force an IU attack error to end the set 26-24 and take the match.
Up next the Hoosiers host their final home match of the regular season as they honor senior Morgan Leach and host No. 10 Illinois at 7:00 p.m. at University Gym.
