COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- USA Swimming announced today that Indiana University head swimming coach Ray Looze has been named women's head coach for Team USA at the 2014 FINA Short Course World Championships, December 3-7 in Doha, Qatar.
"The Short Course World Championships are a wonderful opportunity for Lindsay Vrooman, Cody Miller and myself to rep the United States at the highest level short course meet offered in the calendar year," Looze said. "We will be going up against some of the very best swimmers across the globe. This is an excellent men's and women's team and staff that has been assembled by USA Swimming and we intend to uphold the high-level reputation this country has had in the sport of swimming over the past several decades.
"International swimming has always been important to Indiana University, as is represented by our 61 Olympic medals and this is another step in the process of that university-wide commitment. I am honored and humbled to be the head women's coach and will do all I can to bring about a successful result for Team USA."
Looze is in his 13th season at Indiana and his 10th season as coach of both the men's and women's programs. Last year he led the Indiana men to a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships and coached Brooklynn Snodgrass to the NCAA title in the 200 backstroke, just the second female swimmer in IU history to win an NCAA title. He also boasted the Big Ten Swimmer of the Year in Snodgrass and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in Gia Dalesandro.
Miller and Vrooman, who were both part of IU's successful season in 2013-14, will represent Team USA at the event. Vrooman will swim the 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle events, while Miller made the team in the 50-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke.
In total, 36 Americans - 20 women and 16 men - will compete in Doha. The complete U.S. roster for the 2014 FINA Swimming World Championships (25m) can be found at usaswimming.org.
The 12th FINA Swimming World Championships (25m) will be contested over five days at the Hamad Aquatic Center in Doha. Forty-six events (34 individual and 12 relays) are slated for the competition program, and a total of 138 medals will be up for grabs. Complete event information can be found at FINA.org.
