The meet, which runs through Sunday, continues tomorrow with men's 3-meter and women's platform prelims.
Hixon led the field after prelims with a score of 418.20, almost seven points ahead of Stanford's Kristian Ipsen. Former IU All-American Darian Schmidt was fifth in the preliminary round, scoring 388.50 points. Hixon would finish with a tally of 861.40, 10 points behind Ipsen's score of 871.80. Schmidt finished seventh with a score of 742.40.
Based on the criteria outlined by USA Diving, Hixon has earned a spot on Team USA for the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia in the 1-meter event.
In the women's competition, junior Lacey Houser placed 12th in the field, tallying a score of 246.15 in prelims.
Indiana freshman Jessica Parratto and IU graduate Amy Cozad cruised through prelims of the women's platform, finishing with the top score of 283.44. They advance to the women's platform synchro final on Sunday, December 21.
