ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
Indiana will be one of 14 teams in the field this week in Naples, Fla., at the Talis Park Golf Club. The tournament will feature 36 holes of play on Sunday followed by 18 holes on Monday.
THE FIELD THIS WEEK
The field this week includes Austin Peay, Ball State (host), Cincinnati, Eastern Michigan, Florida Gulf Coast, Indiana, IUPUI, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Toledo, Vanderbilt, Wichita State and Xavier.
LAST TIME OUT
The last time the Hoosiers were on the course, they finished ninth out of 17 teams at the Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Ariz., during the final week of February. Freshman Will Seger led the IU team contingent with a total score of 213 followed by freshman Keegan Vea at 214. But the top overall performance came from another freshman, Andrew Havill, who competed as an individual and posted a T7 finish with a score of 208.
INDIANA IN THE RANKINGS
The Hoosiers have played a very strong fall portion of the schedule with a young team and their solid play has them ranked No. 85 in the Golfstat rankings and No. 78 in the Golfweek rankings this week.
AT THE BIG TEN MATCH PLAY
Sophomore Max Kollin and freshman Will Seger both posted 3-1 records in their first appearance at the Big Ten Match Play Championship. Kollin had three of his matches come down to the final hole and he went 2-1 in those matches.
David Mills: 1-2-1 Max Kollin: 3-1 Keegan Vea: 1-2 Nicholas Grubnich: 2-2 Will Seger: 3-1 Andrew Havill: 0-1
BIG TEN GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Senior David Mills picked up his first career Big Ten weekly honor earlier in the fall, when the conference selected him as the Big Ten Golfer of the Week. The Evansville native earned the award after a T4 finish at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 6-8). He posted rounds of 74, 68 and 72 on his way to his seventh career top 5 finish in a tournament.
YOUNG GUNS
As expected from the start of the season, a number of new faces were going to be carrying the Hoosiers this season on the links. With just two seniors on the roster and a handful of players that had not seen regular time in the lineup in their career entering this season, there were going to be chances for the freshmen to step in and contribute right away.
As the season has gone on, they have become more and more comfortable in the lineup and never was that more evident than at the Snowman Getaway. Andrew Havill, carded the lowest tournament score of the year by a Hoosier at 208 on his way to a T7 finish. His opening round 68 put him in the chase from the start and he carried that through the final two rounds.
A pair of of freshmen also paced the Hoosiers' team scores in the tournament, with Will Seger checking in with a 213 and Keegan Vea right behind him with 214. Seger matched Havill's first round 68 while Vea finished with rounds of 70 and 71 to climb back into the top 25.
GOING LOW
David Mills' second round score of 68 at the Northern Intercollegiate was tied for the best round of the day on Saturday and put him in a position to compete for the individual title on the final day. It was also his lowest round since shooting a 66 in April of 2012.
