HONOLULU, Hawaii - Despite a strong first quarter from the Hoosiers (11-4), the top ranked and undefeated USC Trojans tightened up their defense, holding No. 14 Indiana scoreless for 16 minutes of action, defeating them 15-5 on the Hoosiers first match in the Hawaii Invitational at the Hawaii Aquatic Center.
As she has done during the majority of the matches this season, Indiana senior and leading scorer Shae Fournier notched the first point of the match. She was quickly followed by teammate Shelby Taylor, giving the Hoosiers a 2-1 advantage with four and a half minutes left in the opening quarter. Both Fournier and Taylor finished with two goals apiece.
USC was able to tack on three additional goals, but a long-ball from Fournier in the closing seconds of the first quarter sent the Hoosiers into the second only down one point, 4-3.
The Trojans defensive adjustments, however, proved to be more than effective. Southern California only allowed two more goals from the fast-paced Indiana offense, one at the 2:39 mark during the second from Taylor, and one late in the fourth quarter from freshman Ellie Stott.
During the 16 minute scoreless stretch, USC was able to add seven more goals to their eventual total of 15.
Indiana, now 11-4 on the season, will face No. 11 Hawaii this afternoon at 12:00 pm DST (6:00 pm EST).
