Offense Sputters as Hoosiers Fall to No. 11 Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 14 Indiana water polo team took a 36- 23 shot advantage over host team No. 11 Hawaii in their match Saturday afternoon, unfortunately the ball just couldn't get in the back of the net for the Hoosiers and IU dropped their second match of the Hawaii Invitational to the Rainbow Wahine 9-5 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Indiana Hoosiers are now 11-5 on the season after going 1-for-4 during their seven-day Spring Break road trip.
IU's resident left-hander Colleen McNaught scored the ball on an outside shot for the initial goal of the game. Hawaii matched the Hoosiers goal, but a rocket from senior Shae Fournier on the power play put Indiana back up 2-1. Hawaii, on a power play of their own, tied the score once more and ended the first quarter with a 2-2 tie.
The Rainbow Wahine then went on a 3-0 scoring run lasting all the way through the second quarter and seven minutes into the third, led in mot part by Hawaii's goalie, Amy Carlson, who ended the match with 14 saves.
An impressive behind-the-back toss from center Candyce Schroeder with one minute left in the third period ended the IU scoring deficiency, and the Hoosiers went into the fourth quarter down 5-3.
Juniors Summer Creighton and Shelby Taylor scored the final two Indiana goals in the fourth quarter, but a four-goal period from Hawaii sealed the 9-5 victory for the host school.
Indiana will head home before going to Ann Arbor to face Michigan in a head-to-head match up this Saturday at 12:00 pm EST.
