BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team recorded its second clean sweep of an opponent in as many weeks as the Hoosiers took on West Virginia, Saturday, April 5, on Lake Lemon.
"I was again very happy with the results," said head coach Steve Peterson. "Coming away with a sweep the second week in a row against a good opponent is always something to be happy about. The other primary goal of the racing was to continue to establish a solid base rhythm to our racing style. I definitely think we achieved that."
The Hoosiers and Mountaineers tallied six 2,000-meter pieces with a six-mile per hour cross tail wind on choppy water with an air temperature of 45 degrees. Indiana's First Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 crews competed together against WVU's 1V8 and 2V8 in back-to-back races. In the first Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers' top boat finished in 6:36.8, ahead of the 2V8 (6:55.3) and nearly 34 seconds faster than West Virginia's 1V8 crew (7:10.2). The Mountaineers 2V8 finished in 7:19.2. In round two, Indiana's 1V8 won in 6:45.6, followed by its 2V8 in 7:00.9. WVU's 2V8 took third in 7:20.0 and its 1V8 crew finished in 7:22.6.
In the first installment of the Varsity 4 race, the Hoosiers topped the Mountaineers (7:57.6) by seven seconds with a time of 7:50.5. WVU's 2V4 crew finished in 8:18.5. In round two, Indiana finished in 7:50.7, following by West Virginia's 1V4 (8:05.6) and 2V4 (8:28.7).
Indiana's Novice 8 crew finished off the sweep, beating West Virginia's top Novice 8 boat (7:32.5) by 19 seconds with a time of 7:13.0. WVU's third Varsity 8 boat also competed against the Novice crews and crossed the finish line in 8:02.9. In round two, the Hoosiers beat out the Mountaineers by 18 seconds with a time of 7:28.3. WVU finished second in 7:46.2, followed by its 3V8 in 8:23.0.
"One of the big things we are still working on is trying to find the absolute fastest possible combinations for each crew," said Peterson. "We are still very much in selection mode regarding the lineups and so the student-athletes know their performances on a daily basis, and in particular, in races like these will have a big impact on the crew they will race in."
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, April 12 when they travel to Iowa City to compete in the Big Ten Double Dual. Indiana is slated to race Iowa and guest Louisville, starting at 9:30 a.m. ET.
"Next up we head to Iowa for the Big Ten Double dual, where we will face off against Iowa and guest Louisville," Peterson added. "Louisville was ranked No. 17 in the nation in the first regular season poll and Iowa received votes. Both will be quality opponents that will further test where we are as a team at this point in the season."
