ONEONTA, NY. - The No. 14 Indiana water polo team defeated Marist 15-3 Sunday morning during their third match of the Western Division Round Robin No. 1 at Hartwick College. The Hoosiers superb shooting was too much for the Red Foxes to handle as more than 40% of the shots IU took were counted as points.
Freshman Ellie Stott, making the third start of her career, stole the ball away from Marist, drove down the length of the pool, and got the ball to teammate Shae Fournier who put it in the net for the opening goal of the match. Fournier would go on to complete four goals or her eight shots on the net.
Junior Rebecca Gerrity, another one from Fournier, and a long ball from freshman Emily Milstead put Indiana up 4-0 very quick. Marist was able to get their first point of the match on a power play, but back-to-back scores from Alexis Jones put the Red Foxes in a 6-1 hole at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams were extremely accurate in their shooting with hardly any shots missing the cage. Indiana's goalkeepers did their part to keep Marist from making any runs, however. Jessica Gaudreault blocked seven of the 13 shots taken during her period in goal, while Mary Campbell stopped three of the four shots taken against her.
Both of Allison Campbell's shots went in to end the third quarter with a 12-2 lead. Both Campbell and Milstead shot a perfect 2-2 on the match. Campbell also assisted in three of Indiana's other goals.
Three more points rounded out the Hoosier victory, with Indiana sitting 15-5 on the year. IU will face Notre Dame College at 1:15 pm EST for their last match of the tournament.
