Next IU Race: Sunday, June 1 -- at NCAA Championships - Finals (Indianapolis, Ind.), 8:30 a.m.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team had two crews advance to Petite Finals after today's A/B semifinals of the 2014 NCAA Rowing Championships at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis. IU's First Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 boats will compete in Sunday's Petite Final with a shot at finishing among the top 12 in the country. The Hoosiers' Second Varsity 8 crew will compete in the C Final on Sunday.
"The 2V8 really did a great job today," said head coach Steve Peterson. "I am really proud of them. Yesterday afternoon, they didn't have the race that they wanted but today they regrouped and came back, and really made a strong statement about their speed. They go into tomorrow's C Final as one of the top seed and I can't wait to watch them race."
The Hoosiers opened the day with the 1V8 taking sixth in the A/B semi with a time of 6:48.19. Indiana will face Notre Dame, Harvard, Virginia, USC and Princeton in Sunday's Petite final at 10:40 a.m. ET. IU's 2V8 won its C/D semi with a time of 6:57.52 and will face Louisville, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, San Diego and Northeastern in the C Final on Sunday at 9 a.m. Indiana's V4 also took sixth in their A/B semi with a time of 7:58.79. The Hoosiers will face Ohio State, Notre Dame, Princeton, Michigan and Wisconsin in the Petite Final at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
"Both the First Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 faced extremely hard semifinals," said Peterson. "They both went in to the races trying to be more aggressive but they weren't able to match the speed of the top crews. I think in both cases they really gave everything they could - we are just not fast enough this year to be in the grand final. So tomorrow we will race in the Petite Finals and our goal, as it has been all year long, will be to go faster than we have before. If do that, I think both crews should find themselves in the thick of the races."
