CHICAGO – The Indiana volleyball team rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky, winning 25-15, 18-25, 25-21, 25-20 at the UIC Invitational.
Senior Morgan Leach led the Hoosiers with 14 kills and sophomore Taylor Lebo had 13 kills, hitting a .393 percentage. Sophomore Megan Tallman registered 54 assists and junior Courtney Harnish tallied 22 digs.
After dropping a tough five-set match to UIC to start the day, the Hoosiers (7-1) responded from the start against Eastern Kentucky, jumping out to a 15-2 lead in the opening set.
The Hoosiers hit .500 in the first set as Tallman, who had 17 assists in the set, spread the ball around with five players recording at least two kills. IU won the opening set 25-15.
Eastern Kentucky turned the tables in set two, going from a .143 hitting percentage to a .357 clip and got out to a 9-2 lead. The Hoosiers fought their way back and after a block by Tallman and sophomore Jazzmine McDonald, it was 19-17. Two IU errors allowed EKU to extend its lead to 21-17 and take set two 25-18.
After winning set three, 25-21, the Hoosiers were determined to take set four and end the match with a 3-1 victory.
The fourth match was very tightly contested and by the time either side got to 10 points, there had been six ties. Junior Awele Nwaeze, who had four kills and hit .600 in the set, came up with back-to-back kills to give the Hoosiers a 16-12 advantage.
EKU got to within two with the Hoosiers leading 17-15 after an IU attack error, but the Hoosiers countered with a 6-1 run to open up a 23-16 lead. IU would force EKU in two attack errors to win set four and the match.
Up next the Hoosiers play a midweek game, Wednesday Sept. 17 at IUPUI at 7:00 p.m., before hosting the Hoosier Classic Sept. 19-20.
