HANAHAN, S.C. -- Paced by senior Elizabeth Tong the Indiana women's golf team carded a 308 in its opening round of the season at the Powerade Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.
Wake Forest leads the field after a round of 282. Arkansas (283), N.C. State (287), UCF (288) and Virginia (288) round out the top five, as Indiana is currently 22nd in the 23-team field.
The Hoosiers will tee off at 9 a.m. ET on Monday for round two, playing with Missouri, Penn State and Ole Miss.
Tong found the course to her liking with five birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on the par-4 17th hole and the par-5 18th hole to end her front nine. After going +2 over the first nine holes, Tong came back to go -1 for the rest of the round, countering bogeys on four and six with birdies on the par-3 third hole, par-4 fifth hole and par-4 eighth hole. Tong is currently tied for 31st.
Junior Camille Chevalier posted a 3-over 75 and is tied for 57th. After starting the day with back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11, Chevalier would shoot -1 over the next 12 holes to sit at +1 through 14 holes. After bogeys on six and eight she ended the round with par on the par-5 ninth hole.
Playing in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Alix Kong carded an 80 and is tied for 99th, along with fellow freshman Taylor Howerton. Kong started her round with three-straight holes of par and added two birdies on the front nine, posting a four on the par-5 15th hole as well as a birdie on 18. She also had a solid back nine with five pars but was tripped up with a triple bogey on the par-5 fourth hole.
Howerton carded the first of her two birdies on the 17th hole, adding another on the third hole. She also made par on six of the remaining 16 holes.
Junior Marissa DeCola rounded out the Hoosier lineup with an 11-over 83 (T-116th). DeCola had eight holes of par for the round, including five of the final nine.
