Hoosiers Face Rutgers in B1G Road Test

SETTING THE SCENE • Indiana is looking for its first Big Ten win of the 2014 season as it faces Rutgers for the first time as a conference opponent.
• Rutgers won its B1G opener with a 3-2 OT win at Wisconsin, while the Hoosiers dropped a 1-0 decision to Penn State. • Indiana and Rutgers meet for the first time since 2011, a 2-0 win over IU in New Jersey.
• The Hoosiers are 3-0 in games played at Rutgers.
NEWS AND NOTES • Wednesday's 0-0 double overtime tie with Butler marked its fourth shutout this season, matching its shutout total for all of 2013.
• The Hoosiers are in need of finding an offensive punch, with no goals scored over the last 287:40 minutes of play. • On the flip side IU has allowed just one goal over the last 522:09 of play.
• Indiana put up 20+ shots for the second-straight match in its 0-0 tie with Butler on Wednesday. • The Hoosiers forced Butler goalkeeper Andy Holte to make five saves in his first appearance of the season, but the most audible gasp from the crowd came with 8:40 left to play in the first overtime.
• A corner kick from Patrick Doody into the mixer was headed on by a Butler player in an attempted clearance. The ball landed at the foot of Derek Creviston, whose shot from about two yards out bounced off the right post. Creviston was just inches away from giving Indiana its first goal since the third minute of the Dartmouth game on September 9. • One of Femi Hollinger-Janzen's five shots on the night came 14 seconds into the second overtime period, as he hit a line drive from distance that was caught by Holte.
• While the first half was a back-and-fourth affair, the final 65 minutes was all Indiana, outshooting the Bulldogs by a 14-4 margin, with five looks on frame. • In the 55th minute Jamie Vollmer had a deflected shot saved by Holte. In the 64th minute, a shot from Thompson was kept out of the net as it was parried by Holte, but it got away from him and Brad Shaw was ready to pounce, sending his shot wide right.
• With seven minutes left in regulation, Thompson crossed a ball into the box that Trevor Swartz was inches from getting a foot on, but it did force Holte off his line as he chased the ball, creating a nervous moment for the Butler faithful in attendance. • The Hoosiers are 1-1-1 against ranked opponents this season.
• A tally of 1,719 fans were at the IU-BU match Wednesday night as the Hoosiers are averaging 3,238 fans per game at home.
SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS • Rutgers enters the game at 3-3 overall and is coming off a 3-0 loss to Monmouth at home on Tuesday.
• After opening the season with two victories, RU has dropped three of its last four, with the win a 3-2 OT triumph at Wisconsin. • Jason Wright leads the attack with three goals and one assists, while JP Correa has put up two goals.
• David Greczek has played all 547:16 minutes in goal, allowing 10 scores with 30 saves for a 1.64 GAA. • Six of Rutgers' seven goals have come after halftime.
• Head coach Dan Donigan is in his fifth season at Rutgers. He is assisted by Dave Beck, Bryan Knibbs and Mike Romeo.
SERIES HISTORY • Indiana leads the all-time series with Rutgers 5-1-1.
• The last meeting came in 2011, a 2-0 win for IU on the road. • The Hoosiers defeated the Scarlet Knights by a 3-0 score in 2001 to advance to the quarterfinals.
• The Scarlet Knights lone win in the series came in 1993, a 1-0 victory in Bloomington.

BIG TEN DOMINATION • Since the Big Ten began sponsoring men's soccer in 1991, the Hoosier have dominated the league. • The Hoosiers are 95-22-13 in regular season matches, tallying 29 more victories than second-place team Penn State (66).
• Indiana is 20-1-3 in Big Ten openers. • IU has won 12 Big Ten tournament titles, sharing the 1995 crown with Wisconsin.
• Indiana has also been crowned regular season champion 14 times, including nine-straight seasons from 1996-2004. IU won back-to-back regular season titles in 2006 and 2007 and re-claimed the regular season crown in 2010. • Indiana has been the league's goals-against average leader in 15 of 23 seasons, including 2012 when the Hoosiers posted a 0.72 GAA.
• The Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in goals scored in two of the last three seasons with 39 in 2011 and 41 in 2012. • IU has had a league-record 12 Big Ten Players of the Year, including four of the last seven seasons. Eriq Zavaleta was the Offensive Player of the Year in 2012.
• The Hoosiers have also boasted the Freshman of the Year four of the last seven years. Tommy Thompson won the award in 2013.
BAGELS, BAGELS, BAGELS • Indiana is all about the "bagel" or shutout this year after a 2013 season when it had trouble keeping opponents off the board.
• The Hoosiers picked up their first bagel in the second game of the year on August 31 with a 1-0 win over No. 12 Marquette. • Last year Indiana's first shutout did not come until the ninth game on the schedule, a 2-0 victory over Ohio State on September 29, 2013.
• Shutout number two came in a 1-0 win over Kentucky on Sept. 5, and that was followed by the third shutout of the year on Sept. 8 against Dartmouth by a 1-0 score. • The Hoosiers tallied their fourth shutout of the year in a 0-0 double overtime tie with Butler on Sept. 17.
• Indiana had just four shutouts in all of 2013, after putting up 13 in 2012.
LEADING THE SHIP • Senior Patrick Doody has been named team captain for the 2014 season.
• Doody has appeared in 67 career matches, making 48 starts. He scored his first career goals in 2013 (2) and has seven assists in his career. • His third career goal was the game winner in a 1-0 win over Dartmouth.
• Seniors Dylan Lax, Kerel Bradford and Jamie Vollmer will also rotate as game captains throughout the season.
CAN YOU SCORE? • Indiana is looking for new avenues for goal-scoring production as just 15 of its 36 goals scored last season return (42 percent).
• Junior Femi Hollinger-Janzen is the top returning scorer with five goals in 2013. Next on the list is junior Andrew Oliver, who contributed three. • Sophomore Tanner Thompson is the top returning assist man with four, to go along with one goal scored.
• Three of Indiana's 15 retuning goals come from the defensive end with two from senior Patrick Doody and one from senior midfielder Dylan Lax. • So far this year Hollinger-Janzen, Doody, Trevor Swartz and Michael Riedford have found the back of the net.
• Thompson leads the way with two assists.
CAUGHT IN HIS WEBB • Sophomore Colin Webb is back in goal for the Hoosiers after taking over the starting role toward the end of the 2013 season.
• Webb is already off to a strong start in 2014, picking up his first shutout in a 1-0 win over No. 12 Marquette. For his play vs. the Golden Eagles and also in a 1-1 tie with No. 9 Georgetown, Webb was named to the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic All-Tournament team. • He posted back-to-back shutouts in 1-0 wins over Kentucky and Dartmouth at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
• Webb also picked up back-to-back Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors on September 2 and 9. • His fourth shutout of the year came with three saves in a 0-0 double overtime tie with Butler.
• So far this season Webb has 15 saves and allowed just two goals in 567:59 minutes of actio for a 0.32 GAA. • As a true freshman Webb started all three matches in goal in the Big Ten Tournament, leading IU to wins over Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State en route to the program's 12th Big Ten title.
• Webb finished with three shutouts and 29 saves in 578 minutes of action last fall, posting a record of 3-2-1.
