Throwback Thursday - Brooke Zimmermen
9/4/2014 12:00:00 AM | Women's Water Polo
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the next couple months, we will take a look back at some of the players and teams from the Indiana Water Polo program that have made it the program that it is today - one of the best in the country. This week, we look back at the career of Brooke Zimmerman.
Another in the now growing list of Canadian Hoosiers, Brooke Zimmerman's hometown is Calgary, Alberta. In Zimmerman's career she netted 206 goals, grabbed 172 steals, and dished out a school-record 151 assists. She also holds the record for most assists in a single season (2008) and 2nd most steals in a season (2007). Brooke was a member of the Indiana Water Polo team from 2006-08.
In each of Zimmerman's three seasons, she earned CWPA (Collegiate Water Polo Association) All-Division First Team. During her senior season (2008) she was also named Honorable Mention on the ACWPC All-America team. Brooke was twice chosen to CWPA All-Eastern Championship team (2007, 2008).
We caught up with Zimmerman recently to look back on her career and also catch up with her life after graduation. Here's what she had to say:
What are some of your best memories of your time at Indiana, whether it is with Water Polo or not?
ZIMMERMAN: "Two of my best memories are blasting tunes in the team locker room before and after practice and team brunch at local Bloomington restaurants."
How did playing water polo at Indiana help you prepare for life after college?
ZIMMERMAN: "It helped me gain independence and leadership skills that will always be beneficial in any area of life."
What are you doing now in terms of occupation, where do you live, family?
ZIMMERMAN: "I am currently living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with my boyfriend Tim, my dog Oddy (greyhound), and cat Sookie. I am currently the Head Coach of the Calgary Renegades Water Polo Club and assistant coach of the Canadian Women's Youth National Team."
Do you keep in contact with any of your teammates from your time at Indiana?
ZIMMERMAN: "Of course! One of the best things about playing water polo at Indiana is the life long friends that I gained. Every generation of teammates that I played with, I have kept in touch with. I have attended a couple of weddings and look forward to more visits and reunions in the future! Also, I have been playing Masters Water Polo in the past few years with some other Hoosiers: Kandace Walthaler, Kristin Zernicke, Janis Pardy, Jessica Goldner."
Did you have a favorite "spot" on campus that you liked to go while you were here?
ZIMMERMAN: "Gresham was always a hot spot for us after practice. You can't resist breakfast buddies and grilled cheese!"
Zimmerman also added:
"I have and always will be very proud to be a Hoosier. I still proudly wear my Hoosier gear in Canada, and talk about my experiences all the time. I will continue to encourage all young female water polo players to take advantage of the opportunities that are out there. Thanks to Title IX and Indiana University, I was able to get my education while playing a sport I love. I couldn't have asked for a better team to play for as I have gained not only experience, but a family - my Hoosier family.
