BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana began its 2015 campaign this weekend. The Hoosiers won both of their exhibition games on Saturday, but could not duplicate that result and finished Sunday 1-1.
Sunday was the kick off of the regular season for the Hoosiers. The morning game pitted No. 9 Indiana against the Seahawks of Wagner. Junior Candyce Schroeder got off to a hot start, as she scored three goals in the first 1:49 of the game. After two goals from Wagner and a five meter penalty goal by freshman Kelly Matthews, the Hoosiers were up 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Indiana scored again early in the period to go up 5-2 but Wagner answered back in just over a minute later to cut the lead to two. In the last three and half minutes of the half, there were five combined goals scored and the Hoosiers led 8-5 going into the intermission.
In the second half, junior goalkeeper Mary Campbell would shutout the Seahawks attack as she did not allow a goal in the half. Indiana got on the board in the second half again by a Schroeder goal. The Hoosiers scored five in total in the second half and won the game 13-5. Five different Hoosiers scored in the game: Matthews (4), Schroeder (4), freshman Jennifer Beadle (2), senior Alexis Jones (2) and senior Shelby Taylor.
Game number two on the day was not so easy for the Hoosier water polo squad. Just as in the morning game, Schroeder scored in the first minute to give Indiana the 1-0 lead. Marist then went a three goal streak in under a minute and a half. A last second goal by Beadle brought Indiana to within one, 3-2, to end the first quarter.
After a game tying goal by Matthews, Marist yet again scored three in just over a minute to take their lead out to 6-3. Each side scored another goal in the remaining time of the half brought the half time score to 7-4 in favor of Marist.
The Red Foxes' lead got to as many as four (8-4), but the Hoosiers made an attempt at a comeback led by Taylor's three second half goals and got within one goal with just under four minutes to play in regulation. With Indiana down 9-8, possession of the ball and 30 seconds remaining, Head Coach Barry King called a timeout to set up a final attempt to tie the game. A Hoosier shot was defended well as a Marist defender blocked the shot attempt and time would expire.
