PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Indiana University water polo team (1-3) opened with a strong first half against No. 8 Hawaii at the Stanford Invitational, but it would be Hawaii that used a second half surge to hand the Hoosiers a 10-8 loss in the second game of the day for both teams.
The top offensive performer for IU was Summer Creighton, who finished with four goals while Kelly Matthews, Candyce Schroeder, Sarah Myers and Colleen McNaught all added one goal apiece.
Schroeder drew an ejection just less than two minutes into the game and that opened the door for Creighton to put the Hoosiers ahead less than a minute later. Hawaii would answer back to tie the score at 1-1. Indiana drew another ejection later in the quarter and this time it was Matthews that would cash in to put IU ahead, 2-1, only to see Hawaii come back to tie it in the closing seconds of the period. But there was just enough time left on the clock for Myers to skip a shot past the Hawaii keeper and give the Hoosiers a 3-2 lead after eight minutes of action.
In the second period, Hawaii would tie it at 3-3 early on but Creighton tallied another power play goal midway through the quarter to give Indiana the 4-3 edge. That would be the last lead the Hoosiers held in the contest, as Hawaii added two more goals in the period to take a 5-4 lead at halftime.
After the Hoosiers hit the post with a shot for the third time in the game, Collen McNaught brought IU to within a goal at 6-5 midway through the third period. The final four minutes of the quarter saw Hawaii’s offense on the attack, but the Indiana penalty kill was up to the task and Mary Campbell made some key stops to send the game to the final period with the Hoosiers down just one, 6-5.
Hawaii opened the fourth period with a couple quick goals to take a three goal lead. Indiana received goals from McNaught and Schroeder in the period to draw closer but each time the Rainbows had an answer and held off Indiana, with the final score reading 10-8 in favor of Hawaii.
Indiana will take on No. 2 UCLA at 12:10 p.m. ET on Sunday. The teams will then play a second game on Sunday against one of the four teams in the other bracket.
