PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Indiana University water polo team (1-2) opened its weekend at the Stanford Invitational with a 18-7 loss at the hands of No. 4 California. The top goal scorer for the 13th-ranked Hoosiers was Rebecca Gerrity, who finished with three goals in the contest.
The game began with Cal scoring the first three goals before Gerrity put the Hoosiers on the board following a scramble in front of the Cal goal on a power play. Collen McNaught followed with a shot from the top to cut the Cal lead to 4-2. Alexis Jones brought the Hoosiers to within a goal with less than a minute but the Bears replied with two seconds left to put IU in a 5-3 deficit after the first quarter.
Cal would add four more goals in the second period while Indiana was not able to get into the scoring column, and trailed 9-3 at intermission.
Jones would end the scoring drought for the Hoosiers in the third period after Candyce Schroeder drew the exclusion. Gerrity would add her second tally of the match later in the period, but the Cal offense was able to extend its lead to 16-5 entering the final period.
The final period saw Gerrity cap off her hat trick and Summer Creighton rounded out the scoring with her goal with four seconds remaining.
Mary Campbell made eight saves in goal for the Hoosiers.
Indiana will play its second game of the day against No. 8 Hawaii at 8:00 p.m. ET before taking on No. 2 UCLA at 12:10 p.m. ET on Sunday. The teams will then play a fourth game on the weekend based on the pool play results.
