VERO BEACH, Fla. – After the first two rounds of the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational, the Indiana men's golf team is in 12th place after rounds of 299 and 296 on Monday at Quail Valley Golf Club.
The top individual performer for the Hoosiers was redshirt freshman Jake Brown, who posted a pair of Even par rounds of 72 and is tied for 18th individually. He started his first round at 2-under par after three holes and moved all the way to 4-under par after nine holes. But on his 10th hole – the 3rd hole on the course – he ran into problems and carded a double bogey. He would go on to register two more bogey on his round to fall back to even par. In round two, he once again got to 2-under par after nine holes, but the third hole saw him post another double bogey to bring him back to even par for the round.
Senior Max Kollin had a rocky start to his day, posting a 77 in his first round. But he steadied himself in round two and came back with four birdies and four bogeys to finish with a 72 and a total score of 149, which puts him in a tie for 43rd.
Andrew Havill and Keegan Vea both finished the first day at Quail Valley with two round totals of 151 (+7). Havill opened with a 74 in his first round, as he recorded five birdies in the round but a string of four bogeys in the middle of his round combined with a double bogey near the end off set those birdies. In round two, he carded three double bogeys on his way to a 77. For Vea, he was more consistent on the day and saw one hole in each round thwart his chances of being closer to par. In round one, he was 1-under par going to his 14th hole, but a double bogey was the beginning of him playing the final five holes in 5-over par. In round two, it was a triple bogey on his eighth hole that negated the trio of birdie he posted on his way to a 75.
Sophomore Brendon Doyle also allowed big numbers on individual holes to throw both of his rounds off track on Monday. His opening round of 77 followed by a 78 in round two give him a total score of 155 and a tie for 67th.
The final round of the tournament gets underway on Tuesday at Quail Valley Golf Club, with live scoring provided by BirdieFire.com.
