BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Women's Soccer team put nearly half of its shots on goal on Saturday night, but ended with a scoreless draw against Iowa at Armstrong Stadium.
The Hoosiers gave themselves many opportunities to get on the board, recording 20 shots on the night, doubling Iowa's output and setting a season high. In addition, Indiana earned a season-best 12 corner kicks, compared to four from the Hawkeyes.
"We were very, very dangerous," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "I need them to realize that and I think we're frustrated because we didn't put one in the back of the net. However, I think we've progressed tremendously with this young group. It's going to be very important for us to build off this, train and pick up the little details in the final 25 yards."
After Iowa's Bri Toelle put up the first shot of the game on a wide look in the 10th minute, freshman Hanna Johnson responded with a good look on target just four minutes later, but it was saved by Hawkeye goalkeeper Hannah Clark.
The first half was largely a defensive battle as Indiana just edged out the Hawkeyes with a 5-4 shot advantage at the break.
However, the second half was a different story as the Hoosiers put up 12 shots with six being sent in on goal.
One of the best sequences for the Hoosiers came on an attempt by junior Kayleigh Steigerwalt in the 60th minute as she put up a hard shot that was punched out by Clark. The play resulted in a corner kick, which was collected by freshman Caroline Dreher, whose look went wide.
Indiana once again threatened 16 minutes later as freshman Cassidy Blacha received the ball from senior Jessie Bujouves and sent in a look that forced Clark to run up and make a diving save. A minute later, Bujouves put up a shot of her own, but it was collected by Clark to keep the game scoreless.
Neither team was able to get too much going offensively in the first overtime period as a high shot by Dreher was the only attempt of the 10 minutes. In the second overtime, the Hawkeyes charged down the field and looked to have senior goalkeeper Sarah Stone on a one-on-one situation before the Indiana defense gave chase and was able to clear the ball out of the box.
Dreher did give Indiana one final look to win on a shot on goal in the 108th minute before Clark picked up her ninth save of the day.
The tie is the fifth of the season for Indiana, all of which have come at Armstrong Stadium.
"We really wanted that win, we wanted that goal," said senior defender Emily Basten. "It's a little bittersweet in a way but we walked away with a point and that's going to help us moving forward."
Indiana returns to actions on Thursday as the Hoosiers travel to Rutgers before visiting Penn State on Sunday.
"We challenged them at the end of the game to work a little bit harder and we've just got to be able to execute at the end of the day," said Berbary.
