PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A pair of first-half goals proved to be enough for the No. 23 Scarlet Knights as the Indiana Women's Soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Rutgers on Thursday night.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Sarah Stone tied her season-high with seven saves as she faced 25 Rutgers shots.
"I thought Stone had another fantastic game, " said head coach Amy Berbary. "When you play the No. 23 team in the country, you're going to get some fairly good looks. I thought she did a really good job for us, especially in the second half."
After a pair of early saves by Stone, the Scarlet Knights (10-2-1, 3-2-1 Big Ten) got on the board in the 22nd minute as Samantha Valliant found the back of the net on a header via a cross from Maggie Morash.
The Hoosiers (3-6-5, 0-3-3 Big Ten) looked to answer after freshman Hanna Johnson's shot was blocked by Rutgers, earning Indiana a corner. However, it was cleared to keep the game 1-0 in favor of Rutgers.
Just before half, the Scarlet Knights tacked onto their lead off a corner as Hayley Katkowski knocked one in from short range off assists from Kenie Wright and Erica Skroski.
"They're a good possession team," said Berbary. "We go back to 'why did they even get the corner?' I thought we had a ton of unforced errors in the first half and we were a little too late on our effort. We have to work to putting together a full 90 minutes and not 50 or 60."
Indiana came out more aggressively in the second half, putting up five shots – including three on goal – compared to two first-half looks, with just one being on frame.
The Hoosiers' best attempt came on a shot by freshman Caroline Dreher in the 75th minute as she sailed one up near the top post. However, Rutgers goalkeeper Casey Murphy was able to get her hand up and punch the ball up and over the net.
Up next, the Hoosiers travel to No. 11 Penn State as they take on the Nittany Lions on Sunday at 1 p.m.
"It's about that time of the season when bodies start to break down, so I think this extra day of rest will really help us," said Berbary. "We'll definitely use it to recover and try to continue to fine tune things through the midfield and in our attacking third."
