UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Indiana Women's Soccer team fell to No. 11 Penn State on the road Sunday afternoon, 4-0.
Freshman Caroline Dreher had the lone Hoosier shot on goal, while senior goalkeeper Sarah Stone faced a season-high 35 shots, making 12 saves. The 12 stops for Stone is the most since she registered 12 saves against Penn State in 2012.
"Penn State is a great possession team," said head coach Amy Berbary. "We knew they were going to have the majority of the possession. Our game plan was keep the ball in transition and unfortunately we just couldn't put as much pressure on them as we would have liked to."
The Nittany Lions (10-2-2, 5-1-1 Big Ten) struck early as Raquel Rodriguez found the rebound off a shot by Frannie Crouse. Stone had punched out the ball on Crouse's shot but Rodriguez was there to knock it in.
Indiana's (3-7-5, 0-4-3 Big Ten) first shot of the game came in the 40th minute as Dreher put one on frame near the top of the net, but Britt Eckerstrom was there to push the ball up and over the post.
After the Indiana defense settled in to keep the Penn State lead at 1-0 for most of the half, Mallory Weber scored from 10 yards outs in the 41st minute off assists from Marissa Sheva and Nickolette Driesse to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 advantage going into the break.
Penn State built on the lead in the early going of the second half as Megan Schafer picked up a ball from Emily Ogle out of a set piece in the 46th minute.
Junior forward Lauren Joray put up an Indiana attempt in the 87th minute, but it was wide.
The final Nittany Lion score came in the 89th minute as Elizabeth Ball punched one in from six yards out.
Indiana returns to Armstrong Stadium this week as the Hoosiers play host to Maryland on Thursday at 7 p.m. before Ohio States visits Bloomington on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be shown on BTN Plus.
"The conference standings are tight and we have four games left," said Berbary. "This is a time where we really need leadership. Marissa (Borschke) and Stone have kept a positive outlook and we just need to make sure that we continue to follow their lead to keep working forward."
