BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Kevin Yogi Ferrell scored a game-high 22 points to lead the No. 14 Indiana Hoosiers past Austin Peay, 102-76, at Assembly Hall in Bloomington on Monday night in the opening game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.
Ferrell finished just one assist shy of recording his first career double-double as the senior ended the game with nine assists while also grabbing six rebounds.
With his 22 points, Ferrell moved in to 20th place on IU's all-time scoring list with 1,414, passing both Jimmy Rayl and Kirk Haston. Ferrell also hit four 3-pointers, extending his NCAA-leading streak of games with at least one 3-pointer made to 67.
Led by Ferrell, five Hoosiers (2-0) scored in double-figures in the victory. James Blackmon, Jr. had 20 points, while Nick Zeisloft added 15. Troy Williams netted 14 points, while Thomas Bryant had 11.
For the game, Indiana shot an impressive 67 percent (40-of-60) from the field and 60 percent (16-of-37) from the 3-point mark. In the second half, IU shot 81 percent (21-of-26) from the floor – the highest in a half in the Crean Era – and that included a stretch where the Hoosiers hit 15-straight shots from the field.
The 67 percent is the best for the Hoosiers since they shot 70.6 percent (36-of-51) against Mount St. Mary's on Dec. 19, 2012 in Assembly Hall.
Leading 8-7 at the 16:33 mark of the first half, Indiana reeled off a 19-5 run over the next 5:52 to take control of the game and open up a 27-12 lead halfway through the first half. At the half, the Hoosiers held a 51-39 lead over Austin Peay.
In the second half, the Hoosiers continued their hot shooting to pull away from the Governors. Over a period of 9:56 in the second stanza, IU hit 15-consecutive shots, pushing the team's lead to 27, 95-68, with just over four minutes left.
The Hoosiers return to Assembly Hall on Thursday as they play host to Creighton at 7 p.m. as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
