BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With the match tied 1-1 and the Hoosiers up 18-14 in set three senior Awele Nwaeze stepped to the service line. Nwaeze calmly served the ball for an ace. She went back to the line again and hit to the deep corner of the court for another ace.
The Indiana volleyball team went up 20-14, won the set to go up 2-1 and carried that momentum on to a 3-1 victory against Michigan (24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 25-20) on Wednesday at University Gym.
With the win the Hoosiers notched their sixth conference win, marking the fourth time in the last 20 years they have won six or more Big Ten matches in back-to-back seasons.
The Hoosiers (16-15, 6-13), playing a Michigan team fresh off an upset of No. 4 Penn State last week, played with confidence from the first serve and although they dropped the first set they hit at a .419 hitting percentage and forced Michigan into seven attack errors to set the stage for the match.
Junior Allison Hammond led the Hoosiers with 16 kills and a career-high four aces. Indiana also got 13 kills from senior Amelia Anderson, who moved into 15th on the Hoosiers all-time list for career kills and now has 1,115 for her career.
Junior setter Megan Tallman paced the offensive attack to a .271 hitting percentage for the match with 50 assists and moved into seventh on the Hoosiers all-time list for career assists and now has 2,861 career assists.
The Indiana defense frustrated Michigan with 14 blocks, six coming from senior Chante George and five coming from Nwaeze. Senior libero Courtney Harnish posted 16 digs and junior Taylor Lebo added 12.
In set four the Hoosiers jumped out to a 10-3 lead on back-to-back aces from Hammond. Michigan responded with a 7-2 run to cut that deficit to two at 12-10.
Indiana extended their lead back to four at 15-11 with another kill from Hammond, but the Wolverines cut it back to two at 16-14 with a kill of their own.
The set was played within three points, until Lebo connected on the Hoosiers seventh ace of the match to go up 22-18 and force Michigan to call a timeout.
The teams traded points to 23-19 and a Michigan attack error gave the Hoosiers match point at 24-19. Michigan put down a kill to stay alive, but the Hoosiers responded with a first ball kill from Tallman to Nwaeze to give the Hoosiers the victory.
Up next Indiana will host Minnesota on Saturday Nov. 28 at 7:00 p.m. in their final regular season match of the season. Fans are encouraged to bring a toy to the match that the team will donate to families in need this holiday season.
