Opening Round 291 Puts IU in 11th Place

MAUI, Hawaii – The Indiana men's golf team opened the final event of its fall schedule with a team score of 291 (+7) at the Ka'anapali Classic at the Ka'anapali Golf Course in Hawaii, which left them in a tie for 11^th place out of 19 teams.

The 291 team score is the second-best opening round score at a tournament this season, two strokes behind the 289 posted at the Windon Memorial.

The top individual score for the Hoosiers came from junior Andrew Havill, who finished in 1-under par 71. The score of 71 matches the best round of the year for Havill, which he previously posted in the final round of the Northern Intercollegiate to open the 2015-16 season.

Havill, who started his round on the hole No. 3 quickly moved to 2-under par after birdies on holes 5 and 6 and after giving a stroke back with a bogey on 7 came back with his third birdie of the round on the ninth hole to head to the back nine at 2-under par. He opened the back nine with a bogey followed by six straight pars before carding a birdie on the par three 17^th hole got him back to 2-under par. He would go on to bogey two of his final three holes to finish at even par and a tie for 25^th individually.

Jake Brown matched Havill with four birdies in his first round but also added five bogeys on his way to a 1-over par 72 to put him in a tie for 32^nd place.

Brendon Doyle played his first nine holes in 1-under par but was not able to get on track on the back nine, carding four bogeys and finished with a 3-over par round of 74. Also checking in with a round of 3-over par was junior Keegan Vea, who was 1-over par heading to his last hole but ran into trouble and finished with a double bogey.

Max Kollin completed the Indiana lineup with an 82 in his first round.

The second round will take place on Saturday, with a shotgun start getting underway at 8:30 a.m. HST (1:30 p.m. ET). Live Scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
