BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers are preparing for Sunday's Reno Tournament of Champions, a tournament stacked with top talent from some of the strongest programs in Division-I wrestling. The Hoosiers have picked up some national recognition, both as a team and individually, as they head into their fourth tournament of the season. Let's see how Indiana's wrestlers rank amongst the best of the best in college wrestling.
As a team, the Hoosiers earned their first national rankings of the season after a dominating 3-0 weekend, which included wins over #13/20 Minnesota and Eastern Michigan. Indiana reached a No. 19 ranking in the FloWrestling polls, their highest of the season so far. They received recognition in the InterMat poll and USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll as well, ranking at No. 20 and No. 22, respectively.
Indiana junior and 2015 NCAA qualifier Nate Jackson started the season in the national rankings, but has picked up even more attention after a 12-1 start. Jackson maintained his No. 11 ranking in the InterMat polls, largely due to his decisive win over former No. 20 Nick Wanzek (Minnesota). The Crete, Ill. native made his debut on the FloWrestling rankings, however, coming in at No. 15. He also tapped into The Open Mat's national rankings at No. 16 in the 174 lbs. class.
After a resilient weekend with wins over No. 9 Jake Short (Minnesota) and No. 16 Nicholas Barber (Eastern Michigan), sophomore Luke Blanton snagged his first national rankings of his collegiate career. Blanton becomes Indiana's second ranked wrestler this season with a No. 20 spot on FloWrestling's 149 lbs. rankings. He also received the Big Ten Conference's Wrestler of the Week award, the first Hoosier to do so since Taylor Walsh (December 31, 2014).
