Oliver, #10 Jackson earn technical falls in IU's first dual of the season
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana wrestling team opened their 2015-16 dual schedule with a 25-12 win over the visiting SIU-Edwardsville Cougars on Saturday afternoon. The Hoosiers took seven of the 10 matches, including technical falls by #10 Nate Jackson (r-Jr. 174) and Elijah Oliver (Fr. 125), on their way to a victory in their first home match of the season.
"We knew SIU-Edwardsville was going to be a tough opponent for us," Indiana head coach Duane Goldman said after the win. "We started a lot of young guys today, and for many this was their first dual meet. There were a lot of real positives for us today, and I was really proud of how the guys stepped up and responded well down the stretch."

Jackson amassed a dominating performance in the 174 lbs. match against Clayton Bass. He opened with a 10-1 run in the first period, which included two takedowns and a pair of near-falls. Jackson brought the match to a close midway through the second with a takedown and a four-point near-fall, earning his third technical fall of the season.
Oliver, by way of the draw, took the mat for the final bout of the afternoon. Like Jackson, Oliver earned a technical fall in an all-out performance by the true freshman. He picked up 10 points in the first round, and then closed the match in the second with an escape and three takedowns.
"He's fast," Goldman said of his 8-1 true freshman at 125 lbs. "He hasn't faced any of the swatters that he'll meet this season, the guys who will strategically aim to slow him down. But they're not going to match him on quickness. That's one feather in his cap, and he'll work hard to improve the other aspects of wrestling."
Redshirt freshman Jake Danishek made his debut for the Hoosiers in the 157 lbs. match. He earned four takedowns, two escapes, and a reversal on his way to an 11-5 decision.
"That was Danishek's first match, he was basically 0-0 heading into today," Goldman said. He returned to full practice about ten days ago, so he took the mat cold turkey. We were proud of his performance today."
The Hoosiers sealed the dual win after the penultimate match of the afternoon, the heavyweight bout between Indiana's Garret Goldman and SIU-Edwardsville's Chris Johnson. Points were at a premium in this matchup, and Goldman held a 3-1 lead at the end of two periods. Johnson earned an escape and cut Goldman's lead to 3-2, before the Indiana senior forced a takedown to seal the decision at 5-2. The win came with a valiant effort from Goldman, who sustained a minor injury in the middle of the second period.
"It's something he's been fighting for three years. He's a tough kid, and that's something he accepts when he takes the mat. I was really proud of the way he came out, and how he stayed with it. That was a tough opponent, and being the same age they've seen a lot of each other over the last four years. It was nice to see him come away with the win."
Up Next: Indiana (1-0) vs. #20 Minnesota (4-4)
The Hoosiers will hit the road on Friday, December 11 for an away dual against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The dual is set to begin at 8:30 pm, and it will be Indiana's first Big Ten competition of the 2015-16 season.
