RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- The Indiana University women's golf team currently sits in ninth place after round one of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Hoosiers posted a team score of 301 over the first 18 holes. Arkansas leads the way with a 290, with Kent State (291), TCU (293), Iowa State (293), Northwestern (296) and LSU (296) making up the top-five scores in the 15-team field.
Senior Elizabeth Tong and junior Camille Chevalier lead the way as each posted a 1-over 73 on the day and sit tied for ninth. Tong was 2-under through the first 13 holes of the day but a double bogey on nine put her back at even par. A bogey on the par-4 12th hole left her at 1 over.
Chevalier started on 14 and was even through six holes until a bogey on the par-4 second hole. She bounced back with a birdie on six, but back-to-back bogeys on eight and nine put Chevalier at +2 with four holes remaining. She would go -1 over that stretch, ending with a birdie on 13.
Sophomore Ana Sanjuan shot a 2-over 75 and is tied for 28th in the field. She had a pair of birdies on the day, going -1 on 17 and 11. Junior Maria Mancini's 8-over 80 is tied for 62nd overall, while freshman Pear Siriko put up an 84 in her first collegiate tournament, putting her tied for 78th.
The team is back in action Monday with round two set to tee off at 7 a.m. ET. The final round of play will take place on Tuesday, February 17.
