Golf Finishes T-8th at Lady Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- The Indiana women's golf team saved its best for last, posting a 296 in the final round to finish tied for eighth at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Hoosiers finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 901 (301-304-296). Arkansas led wire-to-wire, finishing at 876. LSU took second (883), with Iowa State (884), Northwestern (886) and Purdue (890) rounding out the top five. Indiana and N.C. State finished with identical scores of 901.
The 296 is a single-round best for Indiana in seven trips to the tournament. This also marks the first top-10 finish for IU at the elite event.
Senior Elizabeth Tong is off to a strong start in her final semester, placing tied for sixth after posting a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to finish at 217 (73-73-71). Tong was off to a strong start today, going -2 for the first 17 holes. Her two birdies came on the par-4 16th hole and the par-4 18th hole. Just one hole away from a 70, Tong was tripped up on the par-5 eighth hole, settling for a bogey.
Junior Camille Chevalier also got her spring season off on the right track, finished tied for 13th at 220 (73-74-73). Chevalier tied for a team best three birdies in the round, going one under on holes 11, 4 and 5.
Sophomore Ana Sanjuan also carded three birdies on Tuesday, posting a 75 to finish tied for 34th (75-78-75/228). Sanjuan found her stroke on holes 15, 18 and 8, posting a score of even par over the front nine.
Junior Maria Mancini posted her best round of the tournament today with a 5-over 77 to place tied for 69th (80-83-77/240). Freshman Pear Siriko was also at her best on Tuesday with a 78, finishing tied for 71st (84-79-78/241).
The women are back on the course this weekend as they travel to Peoria, Ariz. for the Westbrook Invitational, Feb. 22-23 at Westbrook Village Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament features 15 teams and will be held on the par 72, 6,269-Yard Vistas Course.
