CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The Indiana softball team was held to just three hits and no runs as the Hoosiers fell to Cal Poly on Friday, 4-0.
The Mustangs (6-5) struck early as Amanda Sandoval crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Tyler in the top of the first. With two runners on and two outs, freshman second baseman Kennedy Cribbs made a spectacular leaping catch to stop Cal Poly from adding more runs. Cribbs was making just her second career appearance as she made starts in both of Indiana’s games on Friday.
The Hoosiers (2-12) had opportunities to push runners across the plate, including having runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. However, a Shannon Cawley strikeout ended the threat.
Much of the game was a battle of pitchers as Indiana’s Miranda Tamayo came in for relief of Lora Olson (1-5) and did not give up a single run until Cal Poly’s Ashley Tornio scored in the top of the sixth to make it 2-0 in favor of Mustangs.
Mustang pitcher Sierra Hyland (5-2) three a complete game, giving up just three hits and striking out 12 Hoosier batters.
Cal Poly added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh before the Hoosiers went down in order to end the game.
Indiana returns to Big League Dreams Park tomorrow to face BYU in the finale of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at 1 p.m. ET.
