KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 42 Indiana women’s tennis team won its second-straight match over a ranked opponent, this time downing No. 31 Tennessee in convincing fashion, 6-1.
The Hoosiers set the tone from the start, taking the doubles points out of the gate. IU’s Shannon Murdy and Stephanie Smith teamed in the No. 3 match to down UT’s Tiffany Tavares and Victoria Olivarez, 8-6. Kim Schmider and Alecia Kauss followed with an upset win over the 30th-ranked doubles tandem nationally in Tennessee’s Eve Repic and Laurence Guevremont in the No 2 match, 8-5.
Indiana picked up a quick point in singles as Tennessee’s Guevremont retired in the No. 4 match against Paula Gutierrez. Smith gave IU its third point of the day as she defeated Tavares in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, in the No. 5 position.
For the second week in a row, Indiana’s Kauss clinched the team win in a three-set match at No. 2. Kauss rolled in the first set against UT’s Repic, 6-0, before Repic returned the favor with a 6-1 win in the second set. Kauss then took care of business defeating Repic in the deciding set, 6-3.
Tennessee earned its only point of the day in the No. 3 match as IU’s Murdy retired in the third set. Katie Klyczek of Indiana dropped her first set, but rallied to take the final two in her No. 1 match against Joanna Henderson, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Indiana’s Sarah Baron did the same thing, rebounding from a first-set defeat to down Tennessee’s Ashley Boles in the No. 6 position, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
"This was a big road win for us," head coach Lin Loring said. "Both teams were not at 100 percent, we just won more of the three setters. Alecia was down 0-3 in the third against a very good player and won six straight games. That was a huge momentum swing for us and clinched the match. We haven't won at Tennessee in quite some time. We play five of our first six Big Ten matches on the road. Hopefully this will give us some confidence on the road"
The Hoosiers will next take on Illinois in Champaign on Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m. ET.
